As a family photographer, I definitely have MY way of doing things…I think we all do, but I especially do when it comes to my business. When prepping for a session, there are just steps that happen in EVERY single session. I think it helps with providing consistency to my work flow and it also helps keep me organized and feeling very prepared for each time I meet with my clients to capture memories.
So today, you get a peek into those things that have become almost ritualistic for me as I capture children and families.
- I always read over my client worksheet. Each time a client books with our studio, they are given a short questionare to fill out that helps us get to know them better. It has informaiton like children’s ages, names, nick names, how they found me, if they want a specific product. By really digesting this information, it helps me not only connect with them, but I can establish a relationship with them (especially dads and kiddos) right off the bat.
- Make mental notes of must have shots: I don’t always go by this list, but I always have a couple of shots that I know I want to try with certain families…to help make their session unique and special. I usually know the location that I am shooting at so I know what my surroundings will be and so we can have a plan for some specific shots, it helps get the session started. Then I let things happen organically.
- Make sure I’m hydrated and have eaten a bit of protein: This is so important as I know when I’m shooting, if I’m not hydrated or have some protein, then it can make me feel weak and just not on my game. So I usually have a protein bite or two (you can find my favorite recipe here) and I will drink a combo of coffee and water…yes I know not the best, but its what I do.
- Make notes when I’m through: I do this so it helps me again as I build relationships with my clients. I can point something out in a thank you note or I can mention what was going on in a certain shot when I post their sneak peek. I also make notes about what I would do differently and what I liked and worked well. I keep a running “session journal” it helps tremendously for the future!
- Pray! I know this may not mean much to some, but I truly ask God to use me in every session. To help me capture the personality and spirit of the client. I pray that my clients will be relaxed and have fun and that God will just be present.
There you go, my 5 things that I do with EVERY session.
