Family Sessions—Why, When, Where and Who: Burlington NC Photographer

I often get asked about family sessions…and all the details about them.  Mom’s want to know….

  • When is the best time for family pictures?
  • Should they do just the kids or the entire family?
  • How long does the session take?
  • Where do I do them and do I find the locations?

I hope that this post will help to answer all your questions about Family Pictures!  The fact is…that fall is coming, I know it’s crazy as I’m still at the beach, photographing all these beautiful beach sessions, but Christmas is only 4 months away (yikes) and that means that fall is just around the corner and by far, fall is our busiest time as photographers!

The best time for family pictures is late in the afternoon, when the sun is low and golden, and colors are rich, and in the fall it’s just ideal!  In NC, October seems to be the best month for colors and fall weather!  Now for us, we are already nearly booked up for October…with only 3 weekend dates available, and a few weekday afternoons!  So if you are at all interested in family fall pictures…please don’t wait to email us!

Why family pictures?  Because they are important!  There are numerous stories I could share about why pictures are important…but the closest to my heart is my own personal story!  I’ve shared it before, but it’s worth sharing again!  Several years ago, all the women in our family had a girls weekend up at my parents lake house…one of the things my mom wanted to do was get a picture taken of all of us girls (4 generations) my mom, grand mom, sis, me and our girls…we headed to walmart and the picture was horrible…my daughter is crying, my mom is looking at my sister etc…it’s just horrible.  But its the most valuable picture I have of us, as 4 months later, my mom and grandmother were killed in a car accident…now that picture, as horrible as it is, is beautiful and I treasure it!  You need pictures of your family, your kids need you to have them!

Should you do a family picture?  Yes, my feeling (other than what is stated above) is that while you are making the investment in having pictures taken, you should most definitely get in a few!  A few years ago, I was doing a sibling session and I had the mom, at the very end of the session, hop in a few…she wasn’t “dressed” for the session, but those images were some of her favorite!  And I promise, they will be for you too!

Where will the sessions take place?  Well that’s the fun part, and one of the reasons why we feel we are special.  We work really hard at finding the perfect location, we consult with you and try to get a good feel for your family, what your style is, and what you are looking for, then we scour for just the right spot for your session.  Most of the time, it’s unique…and it will always be perfect!

How long does the session last?  About 1 1/2 hours…I try to move fast enough that we don’t loose the attention of little ones (and sometimes dad) but slow enough that you are relaxed and you find it fun!

It’s definitely NOT to early to start booking…so call the studio if you have further questions or email us!  We’d love to hear from you!

This precious family is one of my baby planners…and these pictures were to capture little R’s 6 months…we waited until she was sitting up really well (which is recommended) and headed to a farm…it was perfect!
Thank you C family for letting me capture your beautiful family once again!
